- A short walk along the river from the East-Ayrshire village of Failford (near Mauchline) will bring you to Peden's Cove. These steps were cut into the soft sandstone of the gorge by covenanters in order for their outlawed minister, Alexander Peden, to preach to his congregation, gathered on the opposite bank.
