Day dress

Period:
19th Century
Date:
1880
Description:

This day dress is made of blue pinstriped silk, a fashionable material of the time.  The bodice is decorated with black lace and fabric covered buttons.  The fastenings beneath are hooks and eyes.  The plain neck allows for further decoration such as a detachable collar.  The bustle is gathered into folds and the lower front is frilled.

Perspiration stains are visible at the elbow joints which suggests the wearer was often occupied with activities such as reading or needlework.
