Robert Burns attended Kirkoswald Parish Church in the summer of 1776 when he was studying at Hugh Roger's school.

 

The artist, Robert Bryden, included this etching in his book Ayrshire Monuments. He noted that there are three tombstones in the church yard that are connected with Burns. One is Hugh Roger's own grave, another is a memorial to the Brown family from whom Burns's mother came and the other is that of Douglas Graham of Shanter (of Tam o' Shanter).
