Iron carpenter's axe from Edward I's wooden tower at Lochmaben Castle.

 

The axe was the basic tool of the carpenter, used for felling trees, removing branches, splitting and dressing planks.  Mediaeval tool kits contained familiar items such as hammers, chisels, axes and saws.
