Turnberry Castle

Description:

This painting of the castle where Robert the Bruce is thought to have been born, is attributed to the Reverend John Thomson of Duddingston.

Thomson studied theology at Glasgow University and Edinburgh University. Whilst he was in Edinburgh he took art lessons with the painter Alexander Nasmyth.

Although Thomson remained in many senses an amateur painter, his landscapes were widely admired. He knew JMW Turner and received a visit from him at Duddingston Manse during which they sketched together.

He is noted for his expressive and romantic approach to landscapes and in particular his dramatic seas and skies.

Thomson's father was the Reverend of Dailley in Ayrshire and Thomson suceeded his father in this role prior to moving to Duddingston.
