The Abbey at Crossraguel was founded in 1244 by the First Earl of Carrick. The monks were of the order of Cluniac Benedictines and the Abbey a daughter house of Paisley Abbey.

 

The artist, Robert Bryden, included this etching in his book Ayrshire Monuments. It is thought that Robert the Bruce may have been educated at the Abbey. The Abbey was burned in1307 by Lord Percy after abandoning Turnberry Castle to Bruce.
