The Eglinton Watercolours & Shields
The last great endeavour of the Gothic Revival, a phenomenon which gripped Europe during the mid-18th to 19th centuries, was a tournament staged in 1839 at the Earl of Eglinton’s estate in North Ayrshire. The Eglinton Tournament was captured in a series of watercolours by James Henry Nixon. It is now assured that this significant record of the event will remain within Scotland with East Ayrshire Council’s successful bid to acquire the works.
The watercolours will form an important part of the display at Dean Castle and is our intention to mount them alongside arms and armour displays relating to Howard de Walden collection and also objects relating to the event that we currently have.
These acquisitions were made possible by Grants from The Art Fund, HLF, Barcapel Foundation and the National Acquisition Fund. To read our press release click here.
