Museums and galleries across the region are home to art collections of local and national significance which contain many works of international significance. In most cases they were begun with artworks donated by wealthy and philanthropic individuals, or developed from bequeathed private collections. These collections have reflected the individual tastes of their benefactors. Many have since come into the care of local councils's who have been committed to developing them with ongoing acquisition policies. The focus of these policies has generally been on artworks with a local connection.
