Red Haired Woman

Born Glasgow in 1939 Pat Douthwaite studied mime, movement and dance with Margaret Morris, whose husband J D Fergusson encouraged her to paint. Largely self-taught, she went to live in Suffolk in 1958 and came into contact with Robert Colquhon and William Crozier. Her first solo exhibition was in 1958 and she has since travelled extensively and lived for some of the time in Majorca. Her imagery is often disturbing: “I deal in anger, joy, rage and happiness.” Women from history such as Amy Johnson and Mary Stuart often provide her subject matter and she exhibits her work widely through galleries in Edinburgh, London and New York. She recently spent time at the Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in Eskdalemuir, and was living in Dalton, Dumfriesshire before making plans to move to Spain to live near her son, but sadly she died in Spring 2002.
