Sir Frank Brangwyn was born in Bruges, the son of a tapestry designer. This heritage is perhaps evident in the tapestry -like decorative arrangement of closely woven colours in paintings such as this one.
Brangwyn moved to England to take up an apprenticeship with the designer and craftsman, William Morris. He became a very successful mural painter and a series of murals celebrating the achievements of the British Empire at the Guildhall in Swansea are considered to be his masterpiece. His work was very popular in America.
