Lena Alexander trained at Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh School of Art before moving to Kirkcudbright in 1939. She worked primarily in pastel, sometimes watercolour, painting flowers, portraits, and views of Paris and Venice. A member of 'Scottish Society of Women Artists', Alexander exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. She died in 1983, and was one of the last surviving members of the 'Kirkcudbright School'.
