Alexander Smith

According to the minutes of Kilmarnock's Public Library Committee, 15th Feb. 1949, this marble bust of Victorian poet Alexander Smith was purchased by the Museum Sub-Committee for £5!   The Sculptor William Brodie's most famous work is Greyfriar's Bobby in Edinburgh. He was born in Banff and was apprenticed as a plumber in Aberdeen. Fortunately however, he was later given the opportunity to study sculpture in Edinburgh and then in Rome. He went on to specialise in monuments and portrait busts.
