Sketches of Old Kilmarnock by William Smellie

The creator of this sketch, Old Houses, Titchfield Street, was himself an architect. Born in Partick, Glasgow, William Smellie moved to Kilmarnock to train under the architect Gabriel Andrew and then went into practice in the town. In 1898 he published a book entitled Sketches of Old Kilmarnock which features around 40 of the town's buildings and streets including the Laigh Kirk. Smellie produced the sketches either from study of the buildings themselves or, in the case of buildings no longer in existence, from pictures and drawings lent to him. The sketches are accompanied by information gathered by Smellie from local people well acquainted with the town.
