Charles W Stewart of Shambellie

Charles W Stewart (1915 - 2001); illustrator, costume collector, and Laird of Shambellie, is chiefly remembered for the gift of Shambellie House and his costume collection to the nation in 1977, now managed as the Shambellie House Museum of Costume, by the National Museums of Scotland.

His work as a book illustrator is not so well known, despite the fact that his commissions are from the leading British and American publishers, including the Folio Society and the (American) Limited Editions Club.

The exhibition "Charles W Stewart of Shambellie (1915 - 2001): Artist, Designer and Illustrator" took place at the Tolbooth Art Centre, Kirkcudbright, from 29th Septmber - 22nd October, 2006.  The exhibition aimed to demonstrate his range and skill as an illustrator, in the hope that this aspect of his life's work would become better known and appreciated.
