Art and photography are prevalant in my selection of items from our collections, and reflect my own curatorial interest in the history of Scottish photography. Represented here we have a celebrated calotype by David Octavius Hill, some wonderful late 19th century and early 20th century work by Alan M Nicolson and Milne, and Dr Werner Kissling's captivating images from Eriskay from the 1930s.
The Boyd family also feature prominently in my choices given their historical ties to the area, and I have included several items related to Alice Boyd of Penkil who hosted and supported several artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement such as Dante Gabriel Rosetti and William Morris. I have also included the moving final letter by William 4th Earl of Kilmarnock to his son on the day prior to his execution.
My final choice is a beautiful late medieval Gold ring found recently by chance in a field in Kirkton, one of the many special items that are held in the collections.
