Basket hilted backsword

Early Modern backsword with basket hilt. A backsword is a type of sword that is characterised by its single-edged blade, with the name deriving from the flat back edge opposite the blade's cutting edge. Swords of this type were common military swords for infantrymen as they were cheaper and less complex to make than double-edged swords. The blade for this sword is replacement to the original, made by Andrea Ferrara: a bladesmith of Italian or Spanish origin who was brought over by James IV or V to Scotland.
