Swords

Venetian broadsword

Description:

Broadswords such as this example have a wide, sweeping attack that was used on the field of battle to slash opponents. This 15th century Venetian broadsword is two-handed, which would have allowed the sword to have been wielded with a lot of power.

This broadsword has an s-shaped crossguard, unwrapped grip, and circular pommel shaped to resemble a crown. The blade featured etched hearts pierced with a nail. This symbol is similar to the crest of Auchinleck's Logan family. The heart motif represents the heart of King Robert the Bruce, that in 1330 was taken in a silver casket on a quest to the Holy Land by members of the Logan and Douglas families.
