The Art of Ayrshire Needlework

7a. Madras Panel

Period:
21st Century
Description:

This Madras Panel was presented to Deputy Provost Thomas Farrel of East Ayrshire Council by Reverend Lacey, Moderator of the Church of Scotland 2005/2006.

Prior to the success of the curtain lace industry in the Irvine Valley during the second half of the 19th century, a decorative gauze fabric had been made by the weavers of the Valley towns on hand looms. Towards the end of the 19th century this lace-like gauze was being produced on powered looms. This madras panel was produced by the firm Morton, Young and Borland of Newmilns.

The madras panel has been stitched onto blue cotton, the colour for the Church of Scotland Moderator.
