Iron shod wooden spade

Many wooden shovels had the blade shod in iron for extra strength and protection.  This example, which has a particularly long handle, is said to have been used for digging clay.   An iron sheath covers the bottom and sides of the blade and two angled support plates have been riveted onto the section where the handle and blade join.
