Model Colliery Cage
This model colliery cage is carrying a coal wagon or ‘hutch’. In the early days of mining workers descended into the pit by means of ladders. During the 19th century steam winding engines were introduced which hoisted men and materials up mine shafts in cages. This model cage was produced in order to aid the investigation into a mining accident at Muirkirk in the late 19th century.
