Set of long steel knitting needles and navy yarn

During the 1400s the bonnet became a popular item of dress in Europe.  Scottish craftsmen followed the fashion and towns such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and especially Kilmarnock soon became associated with this profitable trade.   Each hat was hand knitted in coarse wool on four large needles.  When complete it was pounded in water to shrink and thicken the fabric and allowed to dry in the required shape.  The wool was then brushed with  teazles and the surface sheared to give it's felty finish.
