Mrs MacDonald's glove collection

Sanquhar gloves, all in the Duke pattern belonging to Mrs M.E. MacDonald. They were made in the 1950s and 1960s for 5/- a pair by Mrs Aitken of Dumfries.   Examples of Sanquhar pattern gloves illustrating the "Duke" design. This refers to the Dukes of Queensberry and later, Buccleuch, landowners in the parish of Sanquhar and probably the only nobility known directly to its inhabitants. This pattern is the most ostentatious and `showy' of them all. It has variations known as `squares' which may be later inventions and include, Rose, Trellis, Drum and Cornet.
