Thank you letter to Jessie Wilson for wedding present

Period:
20th Century
Description:

A thank you letter to Jessie Wilson from Lady Alice Scott, for her wedding present of a pair of Sanquhar gloves.

In October 1935 Jessie Wilson sent gloves to Drumlanrig Castle, a pair for Lady Alice Scott, sister of the Duke of Buccleuch, and a pair for the Duke of Gloucester who she was shortly to marry.

Both Jessie Wilson and her mother knitted Sanquhar gloves and socks for a living in the years after the First World War. In the 1920s they received 2/6 (12 1/2p) for making a pair of gloves with initials or a full name worked at the wrist. The person placing the order would supply the wool. When orders were scarce they knitted gloves with 'Sanquhar' at the wrist for general sale.
