Tourism

Tourism has expanded in the south-west of Scotland in recent years as other industries have fallen badly into decline. Now one of the largest employers in the area it is also the only growth industry, and the only one which actually manages to increase its profits when the pound is weak, benefiting from more tourists taking advantage of cheaper holidays. The countryside and coastline of the region has always been an attraction from the early days of going 'doon the water' on the Waverly, to the more recent developments of the area as the 'land of Burns' or as a golfing destination.
