Oiled paper fan

Description:

Fashionable in the later 19th century these paper and lace fans were commonly part of a ladies daily attire.

 

This fan has sixteen pleated leaves of black oiled paper decorated with fine lace, supported by gold painted wooden sticks and guards.  The metal finger ring enabled a secure hold and allowed it to be attached to a ladies dress.
