Police helmet, c1880

 

Helmet belonging to Sergeant A. Nichol of the Dumfriesshire Police.  During the 1870s the British Army began wearing helmets which emulated the new Prussian Army.  The police service soon followed suit and the new police helmet was created - including the Prussian style spike orpickelhaube.
