Special Constables Baton (1)

Description:

Special constable's baton, c1850

An act of 1811 enabled Dumfries Burgh to establish a police force, previously town guards of citizens or old soldiers had kept the peace. Acts of Parliament between 1831 and 1835 introduced and regulated the role of Special Constables as voluntary additions to the police force in order to keep the peace.  They were used frequently during periods of social unrest.
