Brass imperial measures of the Burgh of Annan

Period:
19th Century
Description:

Imperial weights and measures have been used in Britain since the Roman times and were standardised in Scotland in 1661.  The act of union introduced English imperial measures into Scotland in 1707 although both measures were used together until 1824.  From 1969 the imperial measure was gradually phased out until in 2000 it became illegal to sell anything in imperial weights or measures except draught beer which is still sold in pints.

6 brass 'barrel' shape measures and two brass jugs engraved with Annan Burgh and their capacity.
