Set of Old Keys for the Tolbooth, Ayr

Description:

Set of 7 keys for the Old Tolbooth, Ayr (the ring is not original). The keys are of various sizes / forms, ranging from the largest at 22.7cm long to the smallest at 8.6cm long.

These are the keys of the first Tolbooth in Ayr, which was erected by 1427 by the market cross on High Street and was eventually taken down in 1810. It was referred to as the Laigh House after the erection of the second Tolbooth on the Sandgate in 1575. This second "High" Tolbooth was demolished in 1824-26. The Tolbooth was used as the Burgh Council meeting place and the town jail.
