Goatskin Charter Bag of Dumfries

This document bag was probably in use over 200 years ago.  The Burgh's Royal Charter was its most important posession. Dumfries' original charter of 1186 has been long since lost.  Robert II ratified the Burgh's rights in a charter of 1395.  Dumfries preserved these rights provided it paid £40 annually into the King's exchequer. The oldest surviving copy of the charter was made about 1580.
