Carola Diary

This diary was kept by 10 year old Jenny (Janet) Scott whilst on a family holiday onboard Steam Yacht Carola in 1907. Carola was built on the Clyde by Scotts of Bowling in 1898 and is now moored alongside the Museum’s pontoon. Scotts built Carola for their own family use. Between Saturday 29th June and 31st July 1907 the family were based at their holiday home at Colintraive, Cowal, Argyll, and spent their days going for trips on the vessel. We left Bowling this morning about ten o’clock and had a lovely sail down to Colintraive. On the way we passed a great many sailing yachts, and sailed round the Lusitania. The diary provides us with a good insight into what it was like to holiday on the Clyde coast and beyond onboard a steam yacht. Thursday 18th July 1907 Weather again fine. Had awning up most of the day. Started in the morning and sailed up Loch Fyne. Landed at Kilfinnan Bay and had a lovely bathe; water very warm...The two great events of today were that Jimmy went in for a dook and Netta was sleepy. Unfortunately, the Scott’s holiday had to come to an end: Wednesday 31st July 1907 Today there was a depression both in weather and heart. All the heavy luggage was put on about 6 am and the rest was put on after breakfast, about 11.30.
