Wash tub & underskirt decorated with Ayrshire embroidery

Clothes were washed using a mixture of wood ash and fat in a round stave built tub such as this one.  Linen and white cotton items were bleached by the sun, although a night's frost was said to improve their whiteness greatly!  Starch could be made from grain or rice, but the most common source was potatoes.
