Quoiting at Bladnoch

Quoiting (pronounced kiting) in progress on the rink on the banks of the River Bladnoch in the corner between the bridge and the road to the creamery and Baldoon.  Quoiting, a skilful and very energetic sport, was popular in the area and continued to be played at Bladnoch until at least the 1940s, the open tournaments attracting competitors from as far away as the quoiting strongholds of the upper Nith valley.  This picture is taken from the south end of Bladnoch bridge.  In the centre background is the railway embankment.  Wigtown also had a quoiting rink, situated in New Road opposite the school on the ground where the former local authority houses now stand.
