George Cross

George Cross engraved with the legend ‘Radio Officer David Broadfoot, M. N. MV Princess Victoria’.   David Broadfoot was the radio operator on the Princess Victoria, the Stranraer to Larne car ferry which sank in January 1953.  Broadfoot stayed at his post sending out distress messages as the ship went down.  He was awarded a posthumous George Cross for his bravery.   At least 134 passengers and crew were lost when the Victoria sank, making it the worst peacetime disaster in British maritime history.
