Silver cup

This was presented to James McWhir by the merchants and ship owners of Dumfries in 1810.   “…in testimony of their esteem and gratitude for his unremitting zeal and personal exertions in defeating an application to Parliament for the renewal of an Act highly detrimental to the improvement of the River Nith and to the commercial interests of the community at large.”
