Provost William Copland of Colliston

William Copland of Colliston (1666-1743)

 

Provost of Dumfries 1702-4 and 1706-8. He was a prosperous merchant of strong character. In 1694 on a voyage to San Sebastian he was taken by French privateers in the Bay of Biscay. His ship was released after its cargo had been removed. This portrait was painted by a follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller in 1731.
