George Wright

George Wright (1851-1916) was born in Annan the second son of John and Margaret Wright, and attended Annan Public School before being apprenticed to local painter, decorator and sign writer John Clemenson. As with numerous artists of his time he was particularly inspired by his visits to Italy and Constantinople, but also produced some beautiful scenes of the Norwegian Fjords. But his first love was the hills and rivers of Scotland and in particular the areas around his home town of Annan.

He exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, the South Kensington Art Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy and was selected for the RSA's prestigious Jubilee Exhibition in Manchester in 1897.  In later life he took a position as Art Master at Annan Academy where his achievements were highly praised by His Majesty's Inspector of Schools.  He died aged 65 after a difficult illness.
