Souvenir tea cup

This souvenir tea cup is decorated with a colour transfer of Burns Statue in Dumfries.  The statue was carved in Carrara by Italian craftsmen working to a model by the artist Amelia Paton Hill.  It was unveiled by the Earl of Rosebery on 6th April 1882. Throughout the 19th century the cult of Burns rose to huge proportions.  Images derived from his life and work, and of the poet himself were frequently used in domestic ornamentation and were to be found in most Scottish homes.
