Robert Burns

Cup made from coconut shell which belonged to Robert Burns

Period:
18th Century
Description:

This decoratively carved cup made from the shell of a coconut was given to Robert Burns by Jock Brodie of Dumfries.  Perhaps unimpressed by the gift, Burns later gave it to a Miss Dickson.

The cup may have been the work of a seafarer.  The dark polished surface is decorated with fine engraved carvings typical of their work, including a shield and laurel wreath, a sailing ship, a rope and grape motif and the words "Peace" and "Plenty".  The cup has at some time acquired a fine box decorated with marquetry.

It is one of the relics of Burns which has been preserved in Burns House, Dumfries.
