Robert Burns' Sons

Although Robert Burns and his wife Jean Armour had 9 sons, only £3 of them survived into adulthood. Shown in this glass slide are William Nicol Burns (1791-1872) on the left and James Glencairn Burns (1794-1865) on the right (His middle name is taken from Burns great friend and patron, the Earl of Glencairn). Their other son, Robert, had died before this picture was taken. After the poets death his family were looked after largely through the help of Sir James Shaw and as a result both of these brothers had easier early lives than their father. Both brothers had successful army careers in India, William becoming a lieutenant colonel while James became a colonel.
