Stamp or trinket box

This is a small round shallow box with lid and is probably a stamp or trinket box.  The colour transfer on the lid depicts Burns, below which is "Robert Burns". Unusually the image of Burns on this box is taken from the Peter Taylor portrait, made in 1786 when Burns was 27 years of age.   Throughout the 19th century the cult of Burns rose to huge proportions.  Images derived from his life and work, and of the poet himself were frequently used in domestic ornamentation and were to be found in most Scottish homes.
