Writing table from the Old Manse of Lochmaben

This desk was used by Burns during his visits to Rev Andrew Jaffray at the Old Manse, Lochmaben. He was the father of Jean Jaffrey, the subject of the song 'The Blue-Eyed Lassie', who was about 15 years old when it was written. She later told of Burns' visits to the manse on his excise duties, "Many times I have seen Burns enter my father's dwelling in a cold rainy night, after a long ride over the dreary moors. It was during these visits that he felt himself perfectly happy, and opened his whole soul to us, repeated and even sang, many of his admirable songs, snd enchanted all who had the good fortune to be present with his manly luminous observations and artless manners."
