Dr Kissling in the Western Isles

Description:

Dr Kissling on The Elspeth, The Western Isles, 1934

This photograph shows Dr Kissling on a yacht, The Elspeth, by the coastline of the Western Isles in 1934.

After leaving the diplomatic service, Dr Kissling was able to spend his time working on his academic interests. He was based at the University of Cambridge.

From 1934 he travelled frequently to Eriskay and South Uist to take photographs of local crafts, agriculture, and architecture.

During this time Dr Kissling made his film Eriskay: A Poem of Remote Lives which shows people on Eriskay at work. The film was shown in London and Dr Kissling donated the proceeds to build a new road on Eriskay.

Dr Werner Kissling (1895-1988) was a German photographer and ethnographer who spent most of his life documenting Scottish crafts, architecture, and agricultural practices. He was associated with Dumfries Museum from the mid-1950s until his death in 1988.
