Fossilised Fern

Much of Ayrshire's industrial heritage is based on the coal seams that lie under a large part of the area.  Ayrshire's coal is made up of the remains of ancient forests - around 300 million years old, and the presence in the past of so many mines locally mean that fossil specimens were commonly collected.  Blackwood also collected his specimens from further afield, this one coming from the Upper Coal Measures of Radstock (Somerset).
