Bust of William Wallace

This bust of Sir William Wallace was produced in 1802 by the sculptor William Reid and is the oldest one known.  It comes from Dunlop House in Dunlop, East Ayrshire.    The Dunlop family claimed descent from the hero and this was one of the reasons for a long correspondance between Frances Anna Dunlop and the poet Robert Burns in the 18th Century.    The bust was, until recently, badly damaged and was restored by East Ayrshire Council Museums service.  The then owners, the Ayrshire & Arran Health Trust, have since donated the bust to the Council and it now stands on display within Dean Castle.
