Born in Crosshouse, East Ayrshire, in 1862, Andrew Fisher, the son of a miner, rose to become Prime Minister of Australia.

He left school to follow his father down the pit, but after his involvement in the Miner's Union and a strike, he was blacklisted and was forced to emigrate to Australia where he again found work as a miner in Queensland. He became a union official before being elected to the Queensland Assembly in 1893. He was to become Prime Minister three times between 1908 and 1915, eventually resigning and becoming High Commissioner to London until 1921. He failed to be selected in 1923 as Labour candidate for Kilmarnock and retired to London, where he passed away in 1928.
