James Keir Hardie

Suffragette Ackowledgement of Support

Period:
20th Century
Description:
This is an acknowledgement of support to the Suffragette movement signed by Emmeline Pankhurst and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. Keir Hardie was a strong supporter of the Suffragettes and in April of 1906 unsuccesfully attempted to introduce a bill to give women the vote. It is uncertain that this certificate was presented to Hardie himself as it refers to endurance of a "long period of privation and solitary confinement in prison for the vote for women cause". Hardie was not imprisoned for his efforts for the cause but worked alongside others who were such as George Lansbury.
