Lady Flora Hastings

Lady Flora Hastings

Description:

Lady Flora Hasting was a Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria. Her story is a sad one. A cancerous growth on her liver caused her stomach to swell leading the Queen to suspect that she had fallen pregnant. She protested her innocence but the Queen insisted on a medical examination.

In this portrait the artist expresses some of the public outrage there was at the unjust treatment Lady Flora received. She is depicted holding the white rose of innocence and inscribed on the tree trunk behind her are the words "Done to death by slanderous tongue".
