Domed Spindle Whorl

Description:

One of the most common finds from this period are spindle whorls. This is a small dome shaped example with a straight central hole and a flat base. The stone is of a grey colour with red mottling and is undecorated. There have been some damage to the object around the dome.

Combed or carded fibre was spun on a spindle fitted with a whorl which gave it momentum as it turned. Most textiles of this period were made of wool. The raw fibre and clothes made from it were often traded between tribes.
