Polished flint axe

This complete flint axe was found in a bog.  It may have been buried deliberately as an offering to some now unknown prehistoric god or spirit.  The axe has been made by knapping or flaking a block of flint.  The blade has been ground and polished to strengthen it.  Axes of this type were made in Northern Ireland and traded into south-west Scotland; they were high status items.
